Our Story
"Too many women and girls in Africa live with pain, stigma, and silence without knowing why."

The Hidden Disease
Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) is one of the most overlooked and neglected gynaecological conditions in Africa. Caused by a parasite found in fresh water, it affects up to 50 million women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa, with 150 million more at risk.
Yet, most women hardly ever receive a correct diagnosis. Its symptoms, from genital pain and bleeding to infertility, are often mistaken for sexually transmitted infections. This leads to stigma, discrimination, and a reluctance to seek care.
Why it Matters
FGS is not just a medical condition. It is a barrier to education, family life, and economic opportunity. Left untreated, it can cause devastating complications: infertility, miscarriage, increased risk of HIV, and even possible links to cervical cancer.
Despite its impact, FGS is largely absent from medical curricula, global health guidelines and disease burden estimates. This silence means millions of women and girls continue to suffer in the shadows.

The WINGS-4-FGS Vision
WINGS-4-FGS was created to change this. Our mission is to:
- Raise awareness and reduce stigma in communities and schools.
- Train healthcare workers and strengthen medical curricula.
- Introduce innovative diagnostics that are accessible, accurate, and affordable.
- Advance new, safe, and available treatment options for women living with FGS.
- Work with policymakers and partners to integrate FGS care into existing health systems.
By combining science, action, and collaboration, WINGS-4-FGS seeks to transform women’s health in Africa.

Aligned With Global Goals
Our work contributes directly to the Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 3 — Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.
- SDG 5 — Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
By addressing FGS, we are helping to create healthier lives, stronger communities, and greater equity across Africa.
